                                                          Mid morning on the Cumberland

Hello there everyone.  Yeah, its been a while since my last report and I apologize.  To be honest with you, it’s been months since there's been anything worthwhile to report regarding fly fishing on the...

October 7, 2019

My apologies for the lack of a recent fishing report.  I’m in one of those seasons where trying to balance work, family life,  and guiding has been crazy lately.  There’s been a lot going on with Lake Cumberland as well as the Cumberland river.  As a result, I’m really not sure where to start with this report.  I could go on and on about how recent extended high temperatures, short term drought, high lake temperatures, and low...

Don Williams with a fat 22 1/2 inch rainbow from a recent Cumberland river trip.

Let's see, exactly where to begin?  It's been a little while since I've put out an updated fishing report.  Quite simply, for the past several months there's been little to report.  Our fall and spring were filled with record breaking rains.  Since October 2018 much of the Southeast rece...

Get those fly rods out because early summer fishing on the Cumberland river is coming fast!

My apologies for not posting a fishing report for a while, but there’s been little to report regarding fishing the Cumberland river tailwater until now.  During the Fall (2018) and Spring (2019), several heavy precipitation cycles hit the entire Southeast with tons of reservoir filling rain.  The results were record setting lake levels,...

Been getting a ton of questions about fishing and boat ramp conditions.  As of this writing, the Corps of Engineers is still pushing 17,380 CFS 24 hours a day and the lake level is at 723.90 and steadily dropping.   The river water quality is still very chalky and sediment ridden.  Spring fishing is not far off if lake levels and generation schedules would calm just a bit more. I visited the river today to get an idea of ramp...

3 generators (2) sluice gates and (1) orifice at Wolf Creek Dam

What's going on with the generation at Wolf Creek Dam?  I've been asked that question more over the past two weeks than I have over the past 17 years.  It's prime time for fishing on the Cumberland river, but recent generation schedules are keeping most fly fisherman off the river.  Central and Southeastern Kentucky usually av...

September 10, 2018

Fly fishing for trout on the Cumberland river hasn't been on fire, but it's been close.  Over the past 2 weeks our seasonal temperatures have changed, more leaves are transitioning to fall color, generation schedules have been mixed, and trout in the river have noticed all of this.

Fly fisherman are enjoying quality trout everywhere on the Cumberland right now.

Of importance to fly fish...

My 7th grader getting it done during a nasty weather day on the Cumberland.

Fly fishing for trout on the Cumberland River has been very productive.  Catch rates have been good and plenty of nice size fish are being brought to the net.  We’ve moved into that part of the year where changes from the summer season to Autumn are starting to surface.  Morning temperatures...

Nymphing is the name of the game on the Cumberland.

Slightly higher than average temperatures and great trout fishing have been the trend over the past few weeks on the Cumberland River.   Summer is in full swing and cool, foggy mornings on th...
